WOW Presents: The Art of Rube Goldberg at the Contemporary Jewish Museum

Wednesday, April 11, 2018 2:00 PM
Located at the Community Hall
San Francisco native and UC Berkeley graduate Rube Goldberg is best known for his "invention drawings" - overly complicated chain-reaction machines designed to perform simple tasks. However, Goldberg was also a versatile and celebrated cartoonist whose work addressed fashion, sports, politics, gender roles, and other aspects of modern life. This exhibit is the first comprehensive retrospective of Goldberg's work since 1970, and brings together never-before-exhibited original drawings and preparatory sketches alongside rare photographs, films, letters, and memorabilia from the Goldberg family archives.

WOW Presents: Surrealist Rene Magritte

Wednesday, May 9, 2018 2:00 PM
Located at the Community Hall
Independent art lecturer and museum docent Avril Angevine explores the intriguing Surrealist Painter Rene Magritte. Featuring bowler hats, large apples, and pipes that aren't pipes, Magritte's paradoxical images are among the most familiar and fascinating of the 20th century. Magritte began in the Surrealist idiom but experimented with a variety of styles before moving back into his own distinctive "hypertropic" style in the 1950s, in which wild shifts of scale and context create a mixture of mystery, illusion, and reality. This lecture complements the SFMOMA exhibit "Rene Magritte: The Fifth Season" on view from May 19 – October 28, 2018.
