About the Event

Featured exhibition: Irving Penn at the de Young Museum

With a career spanning seven decades, Irving Penn was one of the 20th century’s preeminent photographers. Penn is best known for his work at Vogue magazine, where he revolutionized and modernized fashion photography, emphasizing models’ characters through their expressions and gestures. His penetrating portraits reveal Penn’s talent for observing human attitude. His graphic intelligence and ability to shape volumes with light are evident in his studies of nudes and in still life, a genre he favored throughout his career. Included in the de Young exhibition is a special section of photographs from San Francisco’s 1967 Summer of Love, featuring Haight-Ashbury hippies and legendary local rock bands.

This event will not be recorded or offered on Zoom. For special accommodations, please contact the library with 72 hours' notice.
